How To Apply For TOEFL

You can register for the TOEFL iBT on all the days of the week for 24 hours. Your name should be the same as in your identification document which you will have to bring on the day of the test.

  • Phone Registration

    You need to select your test location by visiting www.ets.org/toefl/contact and find out your Regional Registration Center’s phone number. Spell your name as in your identification document that you will be taking with you on the day of the test.

  • Mail Registration

    You need to download and fill in the Registration Form for mail registration. Payment may be made by choosing one of the options available on the form. Students taking the test outside the U.S. and its territories, and Canada, should mail their forms and payment to their respective Regional Registration Centers. The contact information of Regional Registration Centers is available on www.ets.org/toefl/contact. Further, students need to select the country where they are planning to take the test.

    Exam Format

    TOEFL is an Internet-based Test and features 4 aspects of evaluation based on reading, listening, speaking and writing. The TOEFL iBT test is offered 50 plus times in a year.

    • Reading

      In the Reading section, students have to answer questions related to 3 to 4 passages. Each passage will be about 700 words long. Typically, the passages are based on topics taken from undergraduate university textbooks. New types of questions require students to complete summaries or fill out tables.

    • Listening

      In the Listening section, students are required to answer questions based on 6 to 9 passages that are 3 to 5 minutes long. Among these passages, two will be student conversations and four will be discussions or academic lectures. Each lecture passage and conversation can be heard only once. While five questions have to be answered for each conversation, six questions will have to be answered for each lecture.

    • Speaking

      Students will have to complete six tasks in the speaking section. While two of the tasks will be independent tasks, the remaining four will be integrated tasks. In the case of independent tasks, students have to provide answers for opinion type of questions on topics that are familiar to them. In the case of integrated tasks, two involve reading a short passage, listening to a conversation or lecture, and answering a question using the information gathered from the talk and text. When it comes to the two remaining integrated tasks, students have to listen to a conversation or an academic lecture and then provide an answer to a question as regards what they heard.

    • Writing

      Students are required to complete two tasks in the Writing section: one independent and one integrated. The independent task is writing an essay and then explaining it. In the case of the integrated task, students read a passage related to an academic topic and listen to a discussion on it. Then they have to write a summary and explain how it is related to the key points in the passage.

    TOEFL Evaluation

    There is no pass/fail score. Educational institutions and agencies specify the score requirements. The validity of scores is for 2 years post the test date. TOEFL test can be taken as many times as a student wants. Score needed for studying in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, USA and the UK are as follows:

    • Australia

      To secure an admission in universities in Australia, an iBT score ranging between 60 to 90 is mandatory.

    • New Zealand

      Universities in New Zealand prefer students with an iBT score ranging between 80 and 120. The higher the score, the better the chances of getting an admission in top tier universities.

    • Ireland

      Across universities in Ireland, a minimum score of 90 is required for students to successfully get admissions in the country.

    • USA

      Different universities have different requirements. Generally your TOEFL preparation to study a course in the USA should be aimed at achieving a score that ranges between 60 and 90.

    • UK

      TOEFL is widely accepted by universities in the United Kingdom. Students should aim at achieving a TOEFL score of 72 to successfully get admissions to top rated universities.

    • Canada

      The top universities in Canada require an iBT score between 90-100 while most other universities would settle for a score of 90.
