Australia Shines in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject

What Are the QS World University Rankings by Subject?

The QS Subject Rankings evaluate the performance of universities across 60 different areas of study, grouped into five broad categories:

• Arts and Humanities
• Engineering and Technology
• Life Sciences
• Natural Sciences
• Social Sciences and Management
   

This year’s rankings included over 1,700 institutions globally, and Australia stood tall with:

38 Australian universities featured
944 total subject entries (a 5% increase from last year!)

How Did Australia Perform in 2025?

Australian universities continue to cement their place as global education leaders. In fact:

• 13 universities ranked in the world’s top 10 across 8 different subjects
   
• Australia ranked among the top three countries globally for the number of subject rankings per university
   

Here are some standout highlights:

University Highlights

• The University of Melbourne & The University of Sydney each ranked in the top 100 for 52 out of 55 subjects
   
• The University of Queensland (UQ): 50 subjects ranked, all within the top 200 worldwide
   
• Monash University: Joint 4th globally with 49 ranked subjects, including a 4th place globally in Pharmacy and Pharmacology
   
• UNSW Sydney: Joint 5th globally with 48 subjects ranked
   
• Curtin University & UNSW Sydney: Top 5 globally for Engineering – Mineral & Mining
   
• University of Adelaide: Top 5 worldwide for Petroleum Engineering
   
• Australian National University (ANU): Top 10 globally for Philosophy, Anthropology, Development Studies, and Archaeology
   
• Medicine had the highest number of ranked entries for Australia, 31 entries in total!
