    The recent amendments introduced by the Government of Australia have now provided the option for International students to stay back in the country for up to 5 years after graduation. Those students who enroll in university campuses located in areas classified as “Major Regional Centres” will be eligible for a post-study work visa valid for up to 4 years. To be eligible for a stay back period of up to 5 years, students will have to pursue their higher education in university campuses located in areas classified as “Regional Areas.” Those studying in Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane, classified as “Major Cities” as per the revised amendment, will not be eligible for the extended stay back period and will retain their rights of staying in the country for up to 3 years.

    There are different ways to obtain a Permanent Resident status in Australia. The options available under the work stream permanent visa program are the ones more commonly chosen by international students. These are based on a points grid system. You’ll need to have a minimum number of points to be eligible to apply. These include the applicant being under the age of 45 years, a recognized qualification, language proficiency, job experience and so on. Each category is allotted a certain number of points. For example, if the applicant is in the age bracket between 25 and 32 while applying for a permanent residency, he or she is allotted 30 points. If the IELTS score of the applicant is 8 or above, then they will be allotted 20 points and if the overall score is between 7 and 8, they will be allotted 10 points. The educational qualification will also be taken into consideration. Those who pursue a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in Australia will be allotted 15 points. This is just a basic overview of how the system works.

    To study in Australia, international students must prove their proficiency in the English language. IELTS or the International English Language Testing System is accepted as a benchmark to evaluate the language skills of students from non-English speaking nations across universities in Australia. In general, for those students who wish to pursue a Master’s degree, it is a must to obtain an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. An overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0 is the minimum requirement for those interested in studying a Bachelor’s degree. However, based on the previous academic records of the applicant, some universities may accept a lower score as well. For courses related to healthcare, the requirements are higher.
